Santa Claus Village – Magical experience in Christmas Wonderland
*Article contains affiliate linksFar in the north, amidst the snowy fells of Lapland, lies a place where the magic of Christmas comes to life every day of the year. Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Finland is not just a tourist destination – it is an experience that makes hearts beat with the warmth and joy of Christmas. I have dreamed of this place since I was little and finally the time came to make this bucket list experience of every Christmas person into reality. In November, the Santa Claus Express, or how we say in Finland: VR, took us on a night train ride from our city Tampere to Rovaniemi to explore this fascinating Christmas Wonderland, where Santa Claus and his reindeer were waiting for us (or vice versa).
SANTA CLAUS VILLAGE – 7 REASONS TO VISITMAGIC OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
At the Santa Claus Village, you can immediately cross the line of the magical Arctic Circle, which also means entering the special Christmas area. This symbolic moment is a special highlight for many visitors and it is also possible to get a certificate from the information center for a small fee, laminated or not if you wish. We thought that since we were here and wanted some nice memories of the day, we would get a certificate for crossing the Arctic Circle. It’s quite fun, and so this gold-edged certificate with our names on it became part of our Christmas decorations.
MEET SANTA’S REINDEER AND HAVE A REINDEER SLEIGH RIDESanta Claus Village wouldn’t be anything without the reindeer! It’s always a pleasure to meet these lovely northern furry snouts and for us these were one of the highlights of the day. The reindeer in the village are located in front of Mrs. Santa Claus’ house and the reindeer take eager visitors on short reindeer rides around the yard as well as longer forest tours. Neither of us have ever been on a reindeer ride, so this was a must-try. There were no forest tours available during our visit, so we only did a shorter ride in the yard. This was also a nice experience and at the end we got to pet the reindeer.
HUSKIES AND OTHER SANTA’S FURRY FRIENDSAt Santa Claus Village, you can meet huskies and other furry friends of Santa. These are all located at the back of the Village and there is a separate entrance fee for these too. We didn’t have time to say hello to the huskies, because unfortunately the husky farm closed at 3 pm. We also skipped these other furry friends, because we have already scratched many kinds of domestic animals many times in our lives and admission would have been quite expensive compared to that. However, this is certainly a wonderful experience for families with children and why not for others too, if you are interested!
HAVE A CUP OF HOT MULLED WINE WITH MRS. CLAUSThe house of Mrs. Santa Claus is located behind the reindeer and the path leading there is like something out of a fairy tale with Christmas lights. The house of Mrs. Santa Claus is actually a small café, upstairs of which it is possible to go and greet Mrs. Claus for a fee of 10 euros. You are not allowed to take photos of the meeting yourself, but after the meeting you can buy a photo package taken by the photographer elf as a souvenir. We left the meeting with Mrs. Claus for another time, because we were not really excited about the entrance fee.
MEET THE REAL SANTA CLAUS AND EXPERIENCE THE CHRISTMAS MAGICMeeting Santa Claus is a big dream for many Christmas lovers, and that was our dream too. Santa Claus’s office has a souvenir shop, behind which a stunning magical path to Santa Claus’s office is revealed. In the glow of gift packages and colorful Christmas lights, we followed the marked path until we reached our destination – the queue. There were a couple of others here too. Well, luckily for us, the queue wasn’t too long and we were also lucky when we heard that this meeting was FREE. Clearly the time of miracles is definitely not over. Of course, photography was prohibited here too, but you could buy pictures from the elf photographer after the meeting as a souvenir if you wanted. The price of the photo package (2 photos + video of the meeting) is more or less 50 euros, I don’t remember the exact amount. We bought these shots, because the visit was such a memorable experience for us and we wanted to get something permanent from it to admire afterwards. Let the contents of the meeting remain our Christmas secret.
CAFES, RESTAURANTS AND SOUVENIR SHOPSIn addition to the above-mentioned activities, Santa Claus Village is also full of various restaurants and cafes, where you will surely find something small and large to eat for everyone. We went to enjoy both hot mulled wine and delicious hot chocolate in various cafes and kept our hunger away with fluffy korvapuustis and tasty Christmas tarts. However, if you are really hungry, I would recommend heading to the Santamus restaurant for a hearty lunch. After lunch, you can grab a cool dessert drink at the Arctic SnowHotel‘s pop-up Ice Bar, which is located behind the restaurant.
If you are interested in shopping and souvenirs, there are plenty of boutiques here. However, each boutique is quite similar in style, i.e. full of both local crafts and Christmas-themed souvenirs. On the other hand, we did not expect or want anything else. We happily wandered around looking at these Christmas things and even grabbed a couple of nice things to take home with us. In addition to Christmas shops, Santa Claus Village has design stores from Finnish brands such as Iittala, Marimekko and Pentik.
WRITE TO SANTA IN THE MAIN POST OFFICEA visit to the heart of Christmas would be incomplete without a visit to Santa Claus’s Main Post Office. This works as a regular post office, but in addition to that, you can admire letters sent to Santa Claus from all over the world and also write your own letter right there. Since we were here to spend the Christmas-spirited day of our dreams and to seek new experiences, we decided to write Santa Claus a nice little letter. The content of the letter will also remain a matter between us and Santa, but this did crown our trip to this place completely.
Tip! You can buy beautiful Christmas-themed paper for writing letters at the post office counter (One A4/1€), so don’t worry if you haven’t remembered to prepare for writing a letter in advance.
Also Cape Verde has it’s place here
A TRUE CHRISTMAS WONDERLANDSanta Claus Village is a place where Christmas is not just a day on the calendar – it is an experience that lasts all year round. This enchanting place is the perfect destination for anyone who longs for the magic and joy of Christmas in their hearts. Although many things here cost extra and there are plenty of people, a visit is still worth it. Everyone gets to make the experience what they want and experience their own unique Christmas experience. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you can of course come back to experience again and again if you want.
It is wonderful to be from Santa Claus’s fairytale homeland and it is amazing that Finland has such a place that is known almost everywhere in the world. Although I love travel, sun and turquoise sea very much, Christmas is an important time for me – inspired by my own Finnish Christmas traditions.
With hot mulled wine in my hand, delicious Christmas tarts in front of me, I want to wish a Merry Christmas and a fruitful new year of traveling to all my dear readers!

Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos – A night under the Northern Lights in a Glass Igloo
*Collaboration: Arctic SnowHotel & Glass IgloosArctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos offers an unforgettable experience under the Northern Lights, staying in a Glass Igloo and exploring a unique Snow Hotel. Staying in a glass igloo is a dream for many, and what could be more wonderful than making this dream come true in Lapland under the colorful blazing Northern Lights?
WHAT ARCTIC SNOWHOTEL & GLASS IGLOOS?
Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos is like your own little accommodation and experience village in the middle of nature and forest. Here, the city lights are not dazzling and thanks to this, the northern lights also shine brighter. Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos offers idyllic accommodation in glass igloos, which include traditional two-person igloos and larger family igloos. In addition to the igloos, it is possible to experience an unforgettable adventure experience every winter season by staying in a snow hotel. The hotel was originally a family business founded by the entrepreneurial couple Heidi and Ville Haavikko, the idea for which came about when the couple was studying. Ville studied snow construction and the couple wanted to develop something exciting and different.
The snow hotel is rebuilt from snow and ice every year for the coldest season. This is one of the largest snow hotels in Lapland and there is also a snow sauna, ice restaurant and ice bar. The decoration of the snow hotel changes every year, so it looks a little different every year. In 2023, winter started early, so the hotel was built a little bigger than usual. When we visited in November this year, the walls of the snow hotel and snow sauna facilities were only just up, so unfortunately we didn’t get to see this beauty in all its glory this time. The snow hotel will finally open its icy doors on December 15th and will remain open until the end of March.
In addition to accommodation, the hotel area offers restaurant services, a hot tub and sauna for private use, and of course a traditional mixed sauna for free use. During the winter season, you can also enjoy the snow sauna. Of course, there are various activities available depending on the season. There is everything from ice carving to snowshoeing and ice fishing. Free fun can be found in the form of suopunki and traditional mölkky.
The Glass Igloos have everything: Double/twin beds, ensuite bathroom, mini fridge, water/coffee maker BY THE NATURE AND CLOSE TO SANTA CLAUS
Arctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos is located in Rovaniemi, on the shores of Lake Lehtojärvi, about 30 kilometers from the center of Rovaniemi. You can get there either by your own car or conveniently by the hotel’s own shuttle, which runs several times a day between the accommodation and the center. The shuttle also takes you to Santa Claus Village and the airport and train station. The ready-made transportation is really functional and makes this northern experience possible even for those who don’t have their own car.
We traveled by night train from Tampere to Rovaniemi in a private sleeping cabin. We arrived really early and it wasn’t even 8 in the morning. We wanted to make the most of the time by looking around the center of Rovaniemi and grabbing breakfast at what was probably the only open cafe in the center. The shuttle we had booked in advance came to pick us up from a pre-arranged location and this was a private ride, because we were the only travelers. We kept our eyes open the entire ride, because when we are in Lapland, reindeer can be seen almost anywhere and at any time.
NORTHERN TREATS AND COZY DINNER VIBESArctic SnowHotel & Glass Igloos offers a variety of restaurant services: You can choose between the cozy Kota Restaurant or the Ice Restaurant, which is only open during the winter season. Breakfast is served every morning in the Log Restaurant in the main building and includes a variety of savory, sweet, fresh and local delicacies. In addition, you can enjoy delicious drinks from all over, both in the Sky Bar while watching the Northern Lights or in the Ice Bar while sipping cool drinks from ice glasses.
We were able to feast on the Kota restaurant’s three-course menu on two consecutive evenings and this felt like a real luxury. It was wonderful not having to cook ourselves and in the cold winter frost, the warm fire in the Kota felt wonderful. My husband had reindeer stew for the main course on the first evening and I had salmon made in the Kota fire. These were clearly the most popular dishes, of which the salmon definitely won. If you want to eat at Kota more than once, they also offer an alternative menu for variety, so you don’t have to eat the same dishes again (although why not, everything is really delicious!). We didn’t get to try the Ice restaurant, but at least there’s something new to try next time.
GREAT ACTIVITIES FOR EVERYONEThe sauna and hot tub are available for private use and this experience was amazing for a first-time visitor. We have never been in a hot tub in the middle of the cold winter weather. Nothing but hot steams and hats on our heads and a hot tub to look at the scenery. In addition to the private saunas, there is a public traditional mixed sauna, which according to Finnish custom is not recommended to go completely naked, not to scare foreign tourists. Each in their own way, of course. In winter, it is worth trying the famous snow sauna, which we only got to see and hear about the progress of the construction process.
Ice sculpting, ice fishing, snowshoeing and many other fun activities are also available for winter enthusiasts. We got to see the hotel’s large ice block storage and hear a little story behind the snow hotel. Every spring, the hotel collects ice from the neighboring Lehtojärvi, block by block, and this ice is used the following winter in the construction and decoration of the snow hotel. We got to try ice sculpting and this was a fun activity. Every sculpture created by guests will be displayed in the snow hotel, or so we were told. We’ll see if our slightly deformed heart sculpture makes it to the show, or if it gets “forgotten” in the depths of the warehouse.
THE NIGHT OF OUR DREAMS UNDER THE NORTHERN LIGHTSStaying in a glass igloo has always been a big dream of mine. My husband didn’t even know about such amazing accommodation options before this. So, we were both first-time visitors to not only the winter hot tub but also to an igloo. I’ve always dreamed of lying in a plush bed under a glass roof looking at the Northern Lights sky, and now that dream came true. We spent two unforgettable nights enjoying the magic of the north. The hotel has Northern Lights alarms, meaning that as soon as the Northern Lights are visible, they alert each igloo to be ready. You can turn the alarm on or off by pressing the light switch in your igloo.
On the very first night, a strange buzzing started in our igloo. I was on the phone at the time and wondered what the hell that sound was. I had forgotten that it was the alarm. I looked out at the sky above the trees and there they were glowing bright green: Northern Lights!
I had never seen the Northern Lights before and I didn’t really know what to expect. They slowly got stronger and moved quickly, really quickly and moved across the sky here and there. I didn’t know that they moved so quickly and changed shape. I’ve always only seen pictures and videos of fairly straight and stationary Northern Lights, but these were alive and dancing like some kind of wonderful symphony. I took pictures and videos all over, I hopped around the igloo and bounced on the bed in awe. I went outside to watch when it was no longer enough to just admire inside. After all the bouncing, I got tired and layed on the bed and looked up at this wonderful splendor of different shades of green and red and even cried a little. Nature is amazing.
The next day, there was news in Finland about the Northern Lights from the previous night, which had been exceptionally colorful, clear and magnificent over a very wide area and how this beautiful show had lasted all night until the wee hours of the morning. I knew this because our alarm went off almost all night long. I couldn’t wait to turn it off because I didn’t want to miss anything, even if I didn’t much sleep. We were really lucky, because you don’t see the Northern Lights on this magnificent scale very often. The next night we didn’t see any more Northern Lights, because the weather was rainy and foggy.
